The following provided by Mike Miller on the 23rd December 2004 - many thanks Mike!
"So about the pink... I'm one of the owners of Yeti and am on the team
that
does the color and graphics. When we were looking at the 05 model year we
agreed not to radically change the graphics this year. We went through a
process we do year year but printing out color outputs of the bikes and
putting them on the wall to see what the line looks like in total. We liked
what we saw in the 575 and AS_X lines and when we got to the AS_R we choose
3 colors. DONE. "let's go drink a beer". Then we looked up at the wall
and
thought it looks too much like last year on the AS_R...which wasn't a bad
thing as we couldn't build AS_R's fast enough to fill the demand. But we
wanted to have a color that got people to notice our favorite model.
One of the customer service guys that races said he always wanted a pink
bike to race to rub it in the slower guys faces when he won, that he was
fast even if he was small (he's like 5'4"). We all looked at each other and
laughed. We told him we'd build him a pink bike and all waited for him to
leave the room. Then we looked at each other again and said that would
happen if we build a couple of pink bikes for the show and for Seth. Chris
Conroy , the general manager and owner, said he had speced a pink for a bike
for someone and had the paint left over because they never built the bike.
We decided that we'd built ONE bike and see what we thought. We got the
sample and it was quite a shock to see it in the factory. It was SO
different. People either loved it or hated it. So we made the decision to
build 25 in small and have it as a limited edition. We figured we still have
them at the end of the year. After people started to see them we had people
demand them in other sizes and we are going past the 25 mark already.
I believe your bike is the original sample. It was the frame we built up to
take to the show and it was then shipped to the UK for a show their. We
never got it back and I saw you talking about it on Yetifan. So I believe
you might own the first PINK YETI."
and on March 13th 2005 Mike provided this update:
"...and yes I do think yours is both the first pink AND carbon model. History in the making?"
